Cheer up books: Boy & Going Solo

Boy & Going Solo
 by Roald Dahl

What’s it about?
Pre-Potter superstar of kids’ books Roald Dahl relates tales of his early life. Highlights include boarding school japes, an anaesthetic-free tonsillectomy, RAF dogfights and a hilarious ‘manly lover’.

Will it cheer me up?
Possibly. Knowing that you won’t ever have to suffer an anaesthetic-free tonsillectomy or the indignities of a 1920s boarding school might make you feel better about going to work on Monday.

Will it make me cry happy tears?
If you don’t tear up a bit at the very last line of Going Solo, you might be dead inside.
